Padmanbhan Ramnarayan
Professor of Paediatric Critical Care
Professor Padmanabhan Ramnarayan (Ram) is a Professor of Paediatric Critical Care (clinical) in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care at St Mary's Hospital. He also holds several leadership roles such as Deputy Director of the Imperial Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health (PaeCH), Lead for the NIHR supported Incubator for paediatric critical care and Chair of the Paediatric Critical Care Society Study Group (PCCS-SG).
His main research interests are pragmatic clinical trials (particularly related to paediatric ventilation), critical care epidemiology, novel biomarkers for infection (breath, blood) and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve decision-making in critically ill children. He led the FIRST ABC RCTs comparing high-flow nasal cannula with CPAP, the two largest clinical trials conducted in paediatric noninvasive respiratory support. He is currently leading a multicentre trial in bronchiolitis (BACHb) comparing high-flow with humidified oxygen (moderate cases) and CPAP (severe cases) and was/is co-investigator on some of the largest PICU clinical trials such as CATCH, Oxy-PICU, and PRESSURE.
